Spider Veins, Reticular Veins, & Varicose Veins
In some women and men, spider veins—those small groups of red, blue, or purple veins that appear on the thighs, calves, and ankles, become noticeable at a young age. For others, the veins may not become obvious until much later.
Spider Veins are very small veins that become obvious when the pressure inside the vein increases enough to overcome normal resistance to blood flow. The ability of veins to resist increased pressure is greatly reduced among women when the blood level of estrogen is reduced.
Reticular Veins are small, bluish colored veins that carry blood to the skin venules and therefore, are larger. These veins have thin walls and expand with excessive pressure. When this happens, they become large enough to be unattractive, but are not considered to be varicose veins.
Varicose Veins are large, bulging veins often associated with tired, painful or achy legs. Sometimes varicose veins are deeper under the skin surface and not visible, however, the symptoms tend to be the same.
Causes of Spider Veins
A number of factors may contribute to the development of spider veins in the legs, including:
- Heredity
- Hormonal shifts
- Occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing
- Pregnancy
- Weight fluctuation

Spider Vein Removal Benefits
There are effective, safe and usually painless methods available for spider vein laser treatments or varicose vein removal.
Most people who undergo Spider Vein removal will be cleared of their unattractive veins or at least see improvement. About 90% of patients who undergo sclerotherapy will have a reduction in veins and there is little downtime following treatments. This means that you can get back to your daily activities shortly after the procedure.
Types of Treatments
Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is an actual injection into the vein. Asclera® and Sotradecol®, the two newest FDA-approved agents, are what we use. We do not use saline or salt-based solutions due to pain and risk. The new FDA-approved agents cause spider veins to collapse so the body can naturally absorb them.
ELSO Intense Pulsed Light and Laser Treatments
Intense Pulsed Lights (IPL) and lasers can be used for the treatment of shallow, benign vascular issues. Spider vein laser treatments deliver an intense pulse of light to the vein to be treated. The light heats the blood vessels which causes damage to the vessel walls. As a result, the veins shrink and disappear. ELOS IPL penetrates the unwanted vein without damaging or scarring the surrounding tissue. ELOS is a great option for many but may not be effective for certain veins and skin types.
Spider Vein Treatment Overview
The procedure takes about 15 mins to 1 hour depending on the size of the area and the number of veins being treated.
Activity can be resumed immediately after the vein treatment with a possible recommendation of a light compression stocking to aid with recovery.
Treated veins may lighten gradually over a few months, with 3-5 sessions. We recommend a minimum of two treatments for most patients.
It is important to understand that sclerotherapy does not prevent the development of new spider veins and varicosities over the years. Many people will require treatments from time to time to keep their legs clear. Standing occupations, pregnancy, and estrogen increase the creation of new spider veins, and people who are affected by any of these may need multiple treatments throughout the years.

Spider Vein Removal FAQ
Can the appearance of red veins in the face be reduced?
Vein removal treatments can remove or significantly reduce the appearance of unwanted veins on the face including “thread veins”, red veins, and dark veins on the nose and face.
Is vein removal permanent?
The veins treated during vein removal will be permanently removed or reduced in appearance. However, unwanted veins are usually created by underlying factors in the body such as genetics, age, and lifestyle choices. While the treated veins will not return, the body can create new unwanted veins in their place if the underlying factors are not addressed.
Does removing spider veins require surgery?
There are effective nonsurgical methods for removing spider veins and varicose veins, including laser-based and injection-based treatments.
