About Excessive Sweating Treatments
The refined ingredient used in Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Xeomin® is obtained from bacteria. In the case of excessive sweating, these medications are injected shallowly into the skin to block the nerve signals to the sweat glands. Without a signal from the nervous system, the sweat glands are unable to produce sweat. This significantly reduces the amount of sweating in the area, and can even eliminate sweating entirely.

Botox for Sweating Procedure Details
Anti-sweating injections are relatively painless for most patients. Though due to the number of injection sites required to stop the sweat glands in the treatment area, we offer patients optional topical numbing to make the treatment more comfortable, especially in the palms and feet.
Once the procedure is ready to begin, your injector will mark the injection sites with a washable marker. Then, the injector will begin injecting into the marked sites at a much shallower depth than usual botox injections. For two sides of the underarms, hands, or feet, the procedure takes about 30-45 minutes to complete.
Like other botox treatments, there is minimal downtime with anti-sweating injections, and you can resume your normal day’s activities after treatment.
Botox for Sweating FAQ
Botox Types: What are the differences between types of botox?
Botox, commonly known as wrinkle relaxers or neuromodulators, comes in four FDA-approved varieties: Botox® Cosmetic from Allergan, Dysport® from Galderma, Xeomin® from Merz Aesthetics, and Jeuveau™ from Evolus, Inc.
The four types of neuromodulators are variants of the botulinum toxin molecule, and all have comparable effects on the majority of patients.
We are aware that different patients may respond differently to these neuromodulators. Because of this, Boise Image is one of the few aesthetic providers in Boise that carries all varieties of neuromodulators.
Is botox safe for treating excessive sweating?
Yes–Botox® Cosmetic is FDA-approved to treat excessive sweating in the underarm area. Other neuromodulators and areas are not currently indicated by the FDA for the treatment of excessive sweating, but they are considered safe by researchers and practitioners alike.
Does the botox for sweating treatment hurt?
The procedure typically uses a very small needle injected at a shallower depth than other botox treatments, and can be easily tolerated by some patients.
If you have particular sensitivity in the area of injection, your experience may be more uncomfortable than others. Our center offers many options to make your treatment more comfortable, including topical numbing and Pro-Nox (also known as nitrous oxide/laughing gas).
Is botox for sweating permanent?
Like all botox treatments, botox treatments for sweating is non-permanent. The effects can last for up to 12 months before the nerve function is restored and the affected sweat glands begin producing sweat again. We recommend following up on your results every six to nine months to ensure your excessive sweating does not return.
