Dermaplaning & Microdermabrasion
Dermaplaning
Dermaplaning is a method of using a surgical blade to gently scrape (exfoliate) off the top layer of dull, dead skin cells in order to reveal a smoother, brighter complexion. It also removes the fuzzy vellus hair on the face creating an even smoother surface. Along with microdermabrasion, both are forms of physical exfoliation. However, dermaplaning can be used on almost any skin type and condition, unlike microdermabrasion.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion treatments use a minimally abrasive instrument to gently sand (exfoliate) your skin, removing the thicker, uneven outermost layer.
This type of skin rejuvenation is used to treat light scarring, discoloration, sun damage, and stretch marks. Microdermabrasion helps to thicken your collagen, which results in a younger-looking complexion. Collagen is a protein in your skin that is abundant when you’re a child and makes skin appear taut and smooth. Production of collagen declines as we age, resulting in looser, uneven skin.

Treatment Overview
Dermaplaning Overview
It is not used to shape the eyebrows, as the hair is much thicker than the fine vellus hair on your face.
Dermaplaning may be performed every 3-4 weeks with no downtime. This procedure will remove 2-3 weeks of dead skin cells from the facial area.
Multiple treatments may be necessary depending on the skin condition being treated.
Microdermabrasion Overview
Any procedure or facial product (Retin A, Renova, Tretinoin, etc) that may increase your sensitivity should be avoided before microdermabrasion.
The treatment takes approximately 30-45 mins and can cause mild to moderate discomfort. Tolerance varies from patient to patient.
Treatments can be done every 3-4 weeks and multiple treatments may be necessary depending on the skin condition being treated.
Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning FAQ
Can microdermabrasion reduce the appearance of stretch marks?
Microdermabrasion can reduce the appearance of some minor acne scarring, however we typically recommend other forms of Skin Resurfacing to treat acne scarring. Microdermabrasion only treats the skin at the surface-level, so deep pockets and “ice pick” scars are often left unaffected by microdermabrasion treatments.
Further, the surface-level nature of microdermabrasion treatments means that multiple treatments over a long period of time may be required to achieve a satisfactory result for even minor acne scarring, while other methods of Skin Rejuvenation can be used to meet or surpass the results of microdermabrasion in a much shorter time.

Does microdermabrasion reduce the appearance of acne scarring?
Microdermabrasion can reduce the appearance of stretch marks, however we find that our Medical-Grade Microneedling is generally the best approach to reducing the appearance of stretch marks as it can be infused with pharmaceuticals and skin nutrients that are proven to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

What skin types are best for microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion tends to be best for thicker, less sensitive skin. Some patients with sensitive skin may find microdermabrasion too aggressive and would benefit from other forms of Skin Resurfacing.

Can microdermabrasion be used to reduce the appearance of active acne?

Can dermaplaning help with the appearance of melasma or pregnancy mask?
Dermaplaning is generally not used to aid the appearance of melasma or “pregnancy mask.” While Dermaplaning is generally safe for women who are pregnant or nursing, it is a very surface-level treatment that often does not affect the skin deep enough to remove the stubborn melasma pigment. While some Medical-Grade Skincare is safe to help with brightening and evening skin tone during pregnancy and nursing, other forms of Skin Resurfacing treatments that can be undertaken post-pregnancy and nursing are generally best to treat melasma.

Can dermaplaning be used to reduce the appearance of acne and clogged pores?
Dermaplaning generally is not used to reduce the appearance of acne or clogged pores, as the procedure can spread the bacteria that causes some types of acne. There are multiple types of other Skin Resurfacing treatments that can help with active acne.
